FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

CAN I SKIP THE CONSULTATION / PRE-EXERCISE SCREENING?

No.  Undertaking a consultation before taking part in exercise is an important requirement that allows me to exercise my ethical and legal duty of care as a Personal Trainer.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A PHYSICAL ACTIVITY READINESS QUESTIONNAIRE (PAR-Q)?

The written questionnaire is used to gather and check health, lifestyle and medical information.  It includes a series of questions that clarify whether exercise needs to be delayed until GP clearance is obtained.

WHAT TYPE OF FITNESS EQUIPMENT WILL I NEED ACCESS TO?

Programmes can be designed around access to no equipment; in these cases, you can expect movements to be Body Weight based.

Some of my favourite workouts are Body Weight oriented . . . your effort alongside a faithful pair of trainers can take us to rewarding places.

That being said, depending on your goals, some equipment will be needed.

For example, to optimise strength training results for muscle growth, we'd be aiming to challenge and stimulate your muscles, so they break down and repair bigger and stronger, for this, sufficiently heavy weight is needed.

The form of weight(s) that you have available doesn’t matter, we can adapt most movements around the equipment you have, whether a single Free Weight (e.g. Kettlebell, Dumbbell, Plate) or a Squat Rack and Barbell set.

If you have other fitness equipment available, such as a Suspension Trainer (TRX), Stability Ball, Pull Up Bar or Resistance Bands, these can all be incorporated within your Programme.

IN WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES MAY I BE DELAYED FROM PARTICIPATING IN A FITNESS COORDINATES PROGRAMME OR REFERRED TO A QUALIFIED HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL FOR CLEARANCE?

Reasons for delaying exercise include:

  • Health changes that have been reported and could require referral to a GP.

  • Illness, such as a cold or flu.  Advise delay to exercise until you’re feeling better.

  • Inappropriate clothing or footwear, e.g. no trainers for an onsite gym session.

  • Inebriation, exercise should not be undertaken under the influence of alcohol.

  • Pregnancy which could require GP clearance before exercise can commence.

Reasons for medical referral and clearance include:

  • If you answered ‘yes’ to one or more of the PAR-Q questions.

  • Clients with minor injuries that can be aggravated by exercise, for example, sprain or strain.

  • Clients over the age of 69 and who are unused to exercise.

  • Clients with several risk factors for Cardiovascular Disease (CVD), such as inactivity, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, smoking, high cholesterol, family history of CVD (genetics); as exercise can be deemed dangerous.
